The OBD1 computer got fried on the 1994 12 valve Cummins, so we try out some DIY repair techniques on it. Bad capacitors are a common problem with older electronics like this, so that's always a good place to start. Bonus feature is a 1988 F-150 ECM that also failed. Not every unit is an easy repair, but there's a good chance some simple repairs can get you back on the road.
The video you all have been waiting for! My roommate was able to snag a used 99 Cummins ECM, along with a ton of other 24V parts. We had a few pump issues but Luckily, that did the trick! The truck has a lot of other kinks to flatten out but, she's just about there! Thanks for watching!

Hi guys, here is a video I took of a customers truck misbehaving. He called me and said his truck keeps shutting off as if someone turns the key off when no one has. I hooked up to it and saw a code for Power lost with ignition key on and a couple turbo codes. Looked at how the actuator behaves and it was fine. Told him to continue driving it and see if it does it again cause I took it for a drive and nothing happened. He did, happened 15 times within about 5 miles. I came over, wanted to see it for myself and sure enough, this is what it did. My foot was to the floor the whole video, it kept knocking itself out and then coming back. Bottom line is, replaced ECM and truck is back on the road.

Your truck ECM will definitely need to be replaced if it experiences bad physical damage. This can be caused by power surges, strong heat, lightning strikes, short-circuiting, and water damage. There is also the rare case that your ECM needs software changes. This can potentially be fixed with the right tools and software. In this video I go over a simple method for checking your Cummins N14 for an injector or an ecm issue. A miss in the engine is often an injector issue, but sometimes its a wiring or ecm issue. Don't just throw money away on the problem. There's a really easy way to narrow things down. Here's a pdf that can come in handy when checking the wiring and ecm. 🤍

My 1999 2500 cummins not acting right. Sorry for the movement on the camera so much. UPDATE: Issue solved. After replacing the ecm, map sensor, and having a cummins shop look at it. It was the wiring in the VP pump. The pump itself was good, but somewhere in the electronic portion of the VP pump there was an issue that caused the truck to run like it was in limp mode when the engine coolant temp was from around 95 degrees up to 150. Once it passed 150 degrees coolant temp, the truck would run normal. At the end of the day, I had to replace the VP44 pump to solve the issue. All is well now, and hopefully this will save others the time and headache it caused me.
