Lets talk about the installer. First, you get a licence agreement.Y ou get very complete network settings, but they're not user friendly at all. Then you get to pick the role of your system: do you need a desktop, with GNOME, Plasma, or XFCE, a generic desktop for a minimal install, or a server. You can also get other desktop environments from the repos afterwards, like Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, or even just a window manager, like i3. OpenSUSE tumbleweed is one of the rare distros I installed using all its defaults that did NOT manage to give me a bootable system. I reinstalled it, this time carefully picking my partition layout, and this time it worked. Once I managed to boot the system, I got a very vanilla GNOME experience, with GNOME 44. No extensions, no themes, it's the default experience, and that's great. On KDE, there's a tiny bit more customization applied, with an OpenSUSE logo as the menu, and the titlebars defaulting to the breeze classic look, instead of the cleaner "regular" color scheme. It doesn't depart from the base KDE layout, it's still super vanilla. Tumbleweed comes with a lot of preinstalled software, like Evolution, GIMP, LibreOffice, a few games, Tiger VNC, Transmission, and of course, the Yast utility. Flatpak is preinstalled, and flathub is enabled, which is really good. Yast is a control center and setup utility that's been the mainstay of OpenSUSE for years, basically since its first version. It lets you configure your system in depth, way more than what the default settings in GNOME or KDE let you do. So, first, Yast lets you manage software. You can add, remove or edit software repositories, and their GPG keys, and you can install packages or apply patches. This opens a very complete graphical package manager that reminded me of Synaptic. You can install libraries, drivers, whatever is not available in GNOME Software or Discover. It's all RPM packages. But YAST is also a super complete tool if you want to configure a lot of advanced settings graphically. Yast lets you configure the boot loader entirely, you also get a services manager, to let you enable, or disable various services that run in the background. There's a sysconfig graphical editor, to set various variables related to your desktop. And then there are security settings, for AppArmor, configuring the firewall, hardening the system by disabling or enabling various features and settings, and you can consult the logs, all graphically. You can also manage printers and scanners, but, the built in tools for this are... not great. And then there are things I don't think are really needed anymore in a separate tool, like the date and time settings, the language settings, the network settings, the partitioning tool, all of these have equivalents in the Plasma or GNOME desktops, and as far as I can tell, the Yast utilities don't do more than the built in tools. Once I used it, I started to wonder why desktop environments don't give users access to these configs, or why there isn't a third party tool to manage these. Tumbleweed also comes with a graphical btrfs snapshot manager: It lets you create or delete snapshots, which you'll be able to restore to revert your system to a usable state. OpenSUSE also has a web portal to find and install applications.

The release is available for the x86_64, aarch64, PowerPC and s390x architectures. "Leap 15.5 reaches beta phase. The version will offer some newer software versions, but the release is not a feature release. Packages like a newer Mesa and having the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new Leap 15.5 installations is planned. Another new element for Leap 15.5 is a migration option. A new single-click migration streamlines a migration process that took three steps in previous openSUSE Leap releases. The users that want to migrate from previous releases or 15.5 alpha can install openSUSE-repos-Leap, which comes with the repo definition and it utilizes zypp services for repo management, although this feature is not enabled by default. However, a zypper-migration-plugin implementation as the main request on the Graphical User Interface has been fulfilled into a separate element related to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5. #opensuse #opensuseleap #kdeplasma #kde #linuxdistro Todays Video - openSUSE Leap 15.5 Beta!

The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by SUSE Linux and other companies. Promoting the use of Linux anywhere, this program provides easy and free access to openSUSE, a complete distribution of Linux. The openSUSE project has three main objectives: Make openSUSE Linux easier to obtain and the most widely used Linux distribution; Leverage open source collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux users; Dramatically simplify and open development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform preferred by Linux software developers and vendors. openSUSE Leap is created from the same sources and binary packages as SUSE Linux Enterprise. Now, the openSUSE Project has announced the launch of the openSUSE Leap 15.4 operating system, a major version that brings new features, updated components and many improvements. What's new with openSUSE Leap 15.4 Derived and fully binary identical to the newly released SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP4 (Service Pack 4), openSUSE Leap 15.4 comes a year after the release of openSUSE Leap 15.3 and is powered by the Linux 5.14 kernel series, which is maintained by SUSE. This release comes with a unified feature set as well as a seamless migration experience for those who want to migrate their workloads from commercial Linux Enterprise Server to the free openSUSE Leap operating system. For desktop users, openSUSE Leap 15.4 offers three live editions with the latest series of KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS desktop environments, as well as gnome 41 and Xfce 4.16 desktops. Of course, the Wayland composer's side-by-side Edition Sway 1.6 introduced last year in openSUSE Leap 15.3 is also present. In addition, users will be able to install MATE 1.26, Enlightenment 0.25.3 or Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) 20.3, the latter being a new offer in openSUSE Leap. The openSUSE project says that: "New and experienced Linux users get the most usable Linux distribution and stabilized operating system with the regular release of openSUSE. Get updates and strengthen your operating system with the latest openSUSE main distribution. Choose your desktop, configure your system, and take advantage of the platform of choice for Linux developers, administrators, and software vendors." Under the hood, there is an updated tool chain consisting of GNU/Linux technologies such as Mesa 21.2.4, systemd 249.10, Python 3.10, PHP 8.1, Perl 5.26.1, Rust 1.59, Ruby 2.5, Go 1.17, OpenSSL 3.0, sudo 1.9.9, and many others. Several AI (Artificial Intelligence) packages are also available in Leap 15.4, including TensorFlow 2.6.2, PyTorch 1.4.0, ONNX 1.6, Grafana 7.5.12, and Prometheus 2.2.3. Download and try openSUSE Leap 15.4 openSUSE Leap 15.4 is available for download as live ISO images pre-installed with KDE Plasma desktop environments, GNOME and Xfce, as well as a Rescue edition, as well as offline installer images for 64-bit desktops, PowerPC servers (ppc64le), 64-bit UEFI ARM servers and desktops (AArch64) and IBM System ze LinuxONE servers (s390x). VM images are also available for download. That said, the ISO images of openSUSE Leap 15.4 can now be downloaded by accessing the distribution download page. #opensuse #opensuseleap #kdeplasma #kde #linux Todays Video - openSUSE Leap 15.4 released with new features and many improvements!

It explains the basics, like how to connect to the internet or how to change settings, but it also presents a bunch of great features Plasma has and never really talked about before. While Kwin won't replace a full tiling window manager, it now has the ability to create tiling layouts, and then to place windows in the various tiles you created. To set up a tiling layout, you press Super + T, and you'll get that overview, with a default layout, in 3 columns. And then, once your layout suits you, all you have to do is drag a window while holding Shift, and your window will automatically occupy the tiling zone it's sitting above. The widgets and tools have received so many improvements that even in this lengthy section, I can't list them all. First, Krunner got a, update to surface more relevant search results. When hovering over widgets, they'll tell you what you can expect if you middle click them. The tooltips have also been greatly improved. The calendar widget now also supports the Hebrew calendar. The battery monitor shows the status of connected devices, the media applet now has 2 layouts, one for horizontal panels, and one for vertical panels, with the album art only. The color picker can now show up to 9 colors, and clicking a color will automatically copy it to the clipboard, with a notification. The weather widget can now display the temperature in the task bar. Folder view now lets you show hidden folders, pop up notes will make links clickable by default, and Kickoff now supports separators in the menu. The wallpaper list should be much faster, changing wallpapers now uses a transition animation. Floating panels will be automatically de floated when a window touches them, and they'll use less padding and less space in that defloated mode. The breeze theme now has an outline around windows in dark mode, which makes them more easy to parse at a glance, trying to use a VPN will prompt you to install the relevant plugin. Plasma now supports high resolution scrolling under wayland, and they now support content types, which lets the compositor adjust the display's refresh rate depending on what you're doing. Fractional scaling is also now natively supported under Wayland. When sharing your screen on wayland, the window picker will now have thumbnails to let you decide what you want to share. And there's also a new setting to let Xwayland application access global shortcuts. Plasma revamped multi monitor support, so all panels, windows, wallpapers, and widgets are saved per monitor, and restored when a monitor is plugged back in. Next are flatpak permissions. They have their own new settings page, that lets you review what applications have access to, and give them more permissions, or remove some. Discover will now show more flatpak permissions on application pages. The homepage has received a new look. The "all applications" button is also now back in the sidebar, and when you're searching for something, if nothing is available, you'll get a message and a button to search the whole store.
This is not Gecko Linux Rolling KDE Plasma.... This is the real deal. A bit on the hard side. But ones you have set it up...It is a very fine distribution. This distro of Opensuse is much better than Arch. More elegant than Arch. And a bit on the enterprise side of things. I have been contemplating on this distribution for years. Now I have a chance to try it. It is such a wonderful distro. I just install this a few days ago on bare metal. On a Core2Duo P8700 (2) 🤍 2.534GHz CPU With 6 Gigs of RAM and 256 Gigs of SSD..... My laptop really flies with this distro. I never thought that OpenSuse Tumbleweed KDE Plasma could be quite snappy on an old hardware like mine. It took me a lot of work to install applications and packages. To make it work like my daily driver OS...Gecko Linux Rolling KDE Plasma. My guest is that...I get to learn Linux more....I get to install packages using the terminal. Now I am comfortable with it. OpenSuse uses the zypper command. You can find the options for zypper when you type zypper help Also I use opi to install software from the Opensuse build service. It makes installing software much easier. So if you like a distribution that is very elegant and rolling, Try OpenSuse Tumbleweed, You'll never be disappointed of what it can do.

This is 64 bit openSUSE KDE Plasma for the pi4. The desktop looks very clean and elegant and performs well. There are some problems with audio and some glitching. The openSUSE team has announced the release of openSUSE 15.5 Leap, a minor update to the project's 15.x series. The new version mostly offers small updates and security fixes for the 15.x branch of the distribution. "This release brings newer packages like Mesa and others, but Leap 15.5 is a non-feature release. Some of these newer packages to highlight include KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a Plasma Long Term Support version until the next one rolls out in 2024. Konqi lovers will enjoy a new welcome wizard, dynamic customization of desktop workspaces and more functionality with KRunner that includes a full desktop search, unit and currency exchange rate conversions, dictionary definitions, calculator features, and it shows graphical representations of mathematical functions. The Color Picker had a few improvements and added the possibility of displaying another preview color circle. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will be a new package in the release and complement the use of Plasma 5.27. The update fixes bugs with the Desktop Environment applications and highlights the enhancement of compression/decompression utility ark, improvements to text editor Kate and fixes some crashing of the video editor Kdenlive. I have gone full Tumbleweed on my main desktop and my laptop. I broke my Manjaro install but have been itching to give Tumbleweed a full good try again anyway, so, I'm now on Tumbleweed and so far it's going absolutely wonderful.
In this video we check out openSUSE Tumbleweed and all of the amazing features in Gnome 42. openSUSE Tumbleweed is proof a distro can be rolling and stable all at the same time. I love rolling distros. Hand me an Arch or even a semi-rolling Fedora and I'm a happy man. If like me you want the latest and greatest Mesa drivers, the latest kernel enablement (whether hardware or software) and you also want to be run the latest versions of software check out openSUSE Tumbleweed. For the past 90 days I've done my videos, streaming live on Destination Linux, recording Hardware Addicts, coding, writing, and all of my main work on openSUSE Tumbleweed to prove just how stable it can be in production. Technology shouldn't be held back by old software for the sake of stability and Tumbleweed proves you can indeed have both. - BTRFS is a perfect pairing with a rolling distro and the ability to rollback anytime minimizes risks with frequent updates. - Updates always go through flawlessly. OpenSUSE is stable and works every time without fail. - Gaming is great. It's not the fastest I've ever seen but it's far from the slowest. I don't think OpenSUSE does anything special here but since you get latest kernel you benefit from hardware compatibility and software enhancements. - With Flatpak and the OpenSUSE repository you have all the software you'll want. The only place you'll find more software is the AUR in Arch. DasGeek Channel is a proud member of the Destination Linux Network! Head to 🤍k to find more amazing content!
